Artist's Description
People have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands of years. There is no shortage of rituals and traditions surrounding the coming of spring. Many early peoples celebrated for the basic reason that their food supplies would soon be restored. The date is significant in Christianity because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. It is also probably no coincidence that early Egyptians built the Great Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising Sun on the day of the vernal equinox. The first day of spring also marks the beginning of Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

Ernestine Grindal is the creation of Sally Clarke in memory of her late mother, whose real name it was, and whose spirit has been a driving force in her art and never wanted to saddle a child with such a name as Ernestine! "Let's just give her a 'regular name' like Sally or Sara!" Sally grew up near New York City and has been drawing since she realized that crayons didn't taste very good and must have another purpose. She moved into Balsam Lane Studio, Blue Hill, Maine in 2001. Ernestine's Easel was added in 2007 as the the greeting card division of this small art studio.
